I wanted a point-and-shoot camera that had a chance of surviving coming along on adventures with me. I kayak, mountain bike on technical trails (and fall of course), and hike and bike even when it's -20 degrees Fahrenheit. It is listed to operate at 14 F, so if I put it in the pocket inside my jacket in winter, it should survive anything! This camera is listed to be water/shock/freeze/sand proof. Olympus, Cannon, and now Casio and others make such cameras, but I could not find one that would even get close to the deal I found on this one (see package info below). For $ 146.95, I got the XP10 12MP/5Xopticalzoom/2.7"LCD camera + battery (& charger) + 4GB memory card + Fitted neoprene case w/ string + cleaning kit + USB cable + software.
You have to press the open button, slide backwards, and only then pull up (to open the battery & memory card casing) ... not too obvious in the instructions.
Kayak, hiking trips, ... very pleased with this product.
Disclaimer: I have NOT tested it underwater, nor at night, or winter yet. We'll see how it does!
